Apr 25 - Battery Recycling Bill Takes Another Step Forward
AB 2271 (Koretz) was heard in the Assembly Environmental Safety & Toxic Materials Committee today, and despite a heavy presence of coalition opposition, passed on a 4-2 vote. The city of Los Angeles, the sponsor that proposed the idea for the bill, made the case for local governments, who are dealing with the burden of battery disposal at their HHW facilities without sufficient funding or manpower to handle it. AB 2271 will ameliorate that onerous responsibility of collecting batteries for local jurisdictions and build the infrastructure with existing e-waste and bottle and can collectors.
AB 2271 will be heard next in the Assembly Appropriations Committee, but a date has not yet been set.
