Nov 5 - San Francisco Environmental Leader to Become EPA Regional Director

US EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson announced today that she has tapped Jared Blumenfeld to head the federal agency's western region. Blumefeld has been a long term environmental leader within San Francisco city government, as director of both the city's Department of the Environment and the Department of Parks and Recreation, and he has played a key role in advancing the city's recycling and climate change goals.

According the San Francisco Chronicle "he grew his department into a major player on the policy front and helped usher in the city's plastic-bag ban and mandatory composting law." The Chronicle goes on to report that "in his new assignment, Blumenfeld will oversee federal environmental policy and regulation in California, Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, the Pacific Islands and more than 140 Tribal Nations."
