Update: SB 254 (Hancock and Correa), which creates a statewide mattress recycling program, is expected to come up for a vote on the Assembly Floor in a matter of hours.

This bill will reduce the blight, clean up costs and health hazards that occur when mattresses are illegally dumped. Local governnments, usually saddled with clean up and disposal, are spending millions annually to address this disposal problem.

SB 254 will create opportunities and incentives to recycle mattresses, and will offer convenient pick-up, drop-off and recycling options for consumers. It will also create more jobs!

The program will be funded through a recycling charge at the time of purchase. It will be overseen by CalRecycle and a Mattress Recycling Advisory Committee and operated by a non-profit stewardship organization.

Help get the word out and tell your state representative to vote "Yes" on SB 254!

Stay tuned for updates.
