Jan 11 - Increases in Battery Recycling

The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) released its 2006 data reporting that over 5.6 million pounds of rechargeable batteries were collected in the United States and Canada. Last year's success through the organization's Call2Recycle program can be attributed to the increase in retailer participation by 8 percent, increase by 23 percent by community and public agencies and over 48 percent by businesses.

One of the increase in numbers is from the enactment in 2006 of California's Rechargeable Battery Recycling Act, requiring retailers that sell rechargeable batteries to provide consumers with a free option for returning those batteries for proper disposal. There are currently 4,695 locations in California that participate in RBRC's program.
