Feb 2 - Ocean Protection Council to Tackle Marine Debris

The California Ocean Protection Council will meet next Thursday in Santa Monica to consider a robust set of policy goals, the focus of which will be stemming the increasing amount of plastic debris in our oceans. Our ocean's litter problem presents a serious challenge to the stateâ€"both in terms of economics, health and environmental quality. Up to 90% of all ocean debris is comprised of plastics waste. Some evidence suggested that oceanic microplastics may outweigh plankton by a factor of six!

Top on the list of suggestions by the OPC is to extend California’s Bottle Bill to include non-drink plastic containersâ€"a category which contributes significantly to marine debris. The OPC will also be advocating for increased litter enforcement and education.
