Feb 6 - Pressure on Plastic Bags Mounts in UK

Momentmum is building in the United Kingdom to reign in the use of plastic bags as part of that country's waste diversion mandates. Britain's The Independent is spearheading a waste reduction campaign in Parliament, and the House of Commons may soon announce action concerning plastic bag use. Already, several UK grocers have announced they will cut down on plastic bag use, as well as decrease reliance on excessive food packaging.

The 2005 Producer Responsibility Obligations mandates that a minimum of 55% of packaging is recycled by 2008; already the recycling rate for packaging waste in the UK has incresed from 27% in 1997 to 54% in 2005.

Britain's The Press reports that 100,000 tons of plastic bags are thrown away every year in the UK.
