Jun 27 - Oakland Moves Closer to Bag Ban

Oakland moved closer to banning plastic bags in large grocery stores yesterday after the ban passed a key city committee vote, reports Jim Zamora of the San Francisco Chronicle. The measure will now be voted on by the full City Council before it becomes law.

Council member Jean Quan said in Tuesday's hearing that Oakland is currently paying to clean up the plastic industry's mess: "The city pays dearly to clean up littered plastic bags that make their way to Oakland's storm drains, creeks, Lake Merritt, and the Bay."

The Chronicle reports that most of the people attending the hearing were in favor of the ban.
