Sept 14 - Volunteers Gear up For Coastal Cleanup Day

Thousands of volunteers are getting ready to participate in this year's California Coastal Cleanup Day, which starts tomorrow morning. The eventâ€"one of the largest of its kind in the nationâ€"is sponsored by the California Coastal Commission and strives to rid our rivers and beaches of dangerous marine debris. Most marine debris is littered plastic that navigates its way from urban streets and gutters through the watershed and to the ocean. Along the way this litter takes a toll on the environment. Millions of birds and thousands of marine mammals have died from choking on marine debris and in some areas of the Pacific there is six times more plastic than plankton.

The California Coastal Cleanup Day is a state-wide event and there are opportunities to participate in every county.
