Jan 14 - LA County to Vote on Plastic Bag Ordinance

Los Angeles County will vote on an ordinance that would require retailers to greatly reduce their rates of plastic bag disposal or face an automatic ban. The ordinance, which will be considered Tuesday, Jan 22, would require retailers to reduce plastic bag consumption 35% by 2010 and 75 by 2013% through a combination of education efforts, increased use of reusable bags and increased plastic bag recycling. The ordinance was drafted by County staff in consultation with environmental groupsâ€"ncluding CAWâ€"retailers, and others.

If adopted, LA County would be become the largest municipality in the country to enact controls on plastic bag littering.
