Jan 22 - LA County Supervisors OK Mandatory Plastic Bag Reductions
The LA County Board of Supervisors approved a measure today that will require retailers meet stringent benchmarks in the reduction of plastic bag distribution and increase in plastic bag recycling, the first such municipality in the country to attempt such a plan. The ordinance calls on retailers to reduce plastic bag disposal by 30% by July 2011 or face an automatic ban. By July 2013, they will have to reduced plastic bag disposal by 70% by 2013.

The County will now begin working with the 88 cities of Los Angeles County to extend the reach of the plastic bag ordinances beyond unicorporated county territory.
