Feb 29 - UK Prime Minister Tells Retailers to Phase Out Plastic Bags

UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown told retailers yesterday that if they do not voluntarily implement a plan to phase out the use of plastic bags, parliament will do it for them. Brown wrote in an editorial:

“I want to make clear that if Government compulsion is needed to make the change, we will take the necessary steps. We do not take such steps lightly â€" but the damage that single-use plastic bags inflict on the environment is such that strong action must be taken...I have already made clear that over time we should aim to eliminate the single-use plastic bag altogether."
