Dec 15 - Grocery Bag Waste Reduction Fee Introduced

Assembly Member Julia Brownley has introduced legislation aimed at substantially reducing single-use grocery bags. AB 68, which will put a $0.25 fee on all single-use bags at large grocery stores, pharmacies and convenience stores, is aimed at eliminating the billions of plastic grocery bags that are littered and landfilled in California annually. A similar proposal in Ireland reduced plastic bag use by over 90%. The Ocean Protection Council recently called on legislators to adopt a bag fee in order to reduce plastic litter pollution. AB 68 builds on last year's AB 2058/2769 by Assembly Member Lloyd Levine.
