Dec 10 - New Study of Contamination in Single-Stream Recycling Recommends Bottle Bills

A new study by the Container Recycling Institute studies the contamination problems of single-stream curbside recycling. Though single-stream can lead to greater volumes of recyclables, it can damage the quality of recyclables and result in them being sold for a lower grade or even landfilled. The study recommends that cities consider other options for more efficient collection, such as dual stream collection.

The study also recommends that the remaining 39 states that do not have Bottle Bills adopt Bottle Bills, because container deposit laws significantly increase the collection of clean, high-quality beverage containers.
