Single-Use Bag Ban Bill Faces Vote in

 Senate Environmental Quality Committee

SACRAMENTO-A measure by Assemblywoman Julia Brownley, D-Santa Monica, to ban single-use, carryout bags at grocery, drug, liquor and convenience stores will be heard in the Senate Environmental Quality Committee on Monday, June 28.

AB 1998 encourages shoppers to switch to reusable bags because plastic bag trash pollutes oceans and waterways, injures and kills marine life, and costs California
about $25 million a year to collect and send to landfills. When consumers forget their reusable bags, AB 1998 permits the sale of recyclable paper bags at a reasonable cost of not less than 5 cents.
