Plastics Lobby Fights Carryout Bag Reduction BillDear Supporter, Plastic bag litter is a serious problem that kills thousands of marine animals every year. Cleanup of plastic bags costs local governments millions. Under AB 2058, retailers would be required to charge a 25 cent fee for paper and plastic bags, the proceeds of which would be used for local litter clean-up. This approach has reduced plastic bag consumption in Ireland by over 90%. The plastics industry has bankrolled a misleading media campaign to prevent efforts to reduce marine pollution. They are framing the issue as a bag tax that will hurt low income Californians when they go to the grocery store. In reality, the purpose of the bill is to encourage the use of reusable bags while easing the financial burden of local governments from clogged storm drains and litter clean up. AB 2058 needs your help. It will be heard in the Senate Appropriations Committee on August 4th and will presumably be heard on the Senate Floor afterwards. Let your Senator know that Californians are serious about preventing carryout bag pollution. Please take a few moments to customize this letter by adding your name and address, then faxing it to your local state senator.
